How avisub will work on DIVX3 avi's

Postby trustfm » Sat Apr 29, 2006 5:07 pm

This guide is for avisub 1.9 or older Please take a look at this newer guide if you use avisub 2.1 or later.

Software needed :
avisub
avic

Let's say that we have an avi that cannot be processed by avisub. (Avisub cannot generate any *.divx file)

1)
We run AviC.exe and we load the avi.
If we get Fourcc description code: div3
and fourcc used codec : DIV3
then we have an divx3 format avi.
We change the Fourcc description code and the fourcc used codec to DIVX and we press apply.

2)
Now we run avisub and we load avi and the srt .
We press generate subbed avi and wait ... this time the avi will be processed !

3)
We rename the avisub.divx to avisub.avi .
We run again AviC.exe and we load the avisub.avi
We get something like :
Fourcc description code: divx
and fourcc used codec : DX50
We change the Fourcc description code and the fourcc used codec to DIV3 and we press apply.

4)
We rename the avisub.avi to avisub.divx .
All done !

gray *green* picture is missing last step

when you finish muxing you get avisub.divx
change extension of this file to avisub.avi
open this file in fourcc chnager
set both to DIV3 then apply

gray (green) picrture is product of color space used by DIV3 and DIVX(XVID) codecs

when you forget last step result is always this no picture at all (just gray or green screen) and subtitles must be displayed corectly

There is another version of avic.exe that saves you from having to rename the extension to ".avi" to use it.

The version you have above, Nic's Mini AviC FourCC Changer, in its File Open dialog box, only has one choice in the dropdown box for "Files of type": AVI Files (*.avi).

This other version, AVI FourCC Code Changer, looks almost the same, except it allows one to also open Files of type: All files (*.*). You can get this freeware from InMatrix, makers of Zoom Player - the download also has source code:
http://www.inmatrix.com/files/avic_download.shtml

On the other hand, this version is 255KB versus 6KB for Nic's. Also, dropdown box choices are different for the FourCC codes are different, but you can always type what you want in the input box:

FourCC Description Code: mp41, mp42, mp43, DIV4 (versus XVID, DIVX, DIV3)
FourCC Used Codec: mp41, mp42, mp43, DIV3 (versus XVID, DIVX, DIV3)

So, six of one and half a dozen of the other (in terms of differences). But the standalone executables (one executable each, no installation) are small enough to have both on your system.
