Download Vdubmod
Now run it and do like this...

STEP1
drag and drop your *.divx file

STEP2
press ok :

STEP3
press file->save as...

STEP4
select 'Direct stream copy', put an output filename like demuxed.avi, press 'save'

Now you have the avi without the subtitles. At this time we can re-download the subtitles from internet.
(I did not have found any option to demux the muxed subtitles from an *.divx)

*TIP Once muxed the subtitles to *.divx DONOT delete the subtitle file !!!

i have some programming skills , i did alot of applications ...and a few tools for my own ..

let me think with you .... let's .. brainstorm this issue ......

according to my information ....
when the .srt subtitle is muxed into the avi , it must be inserted somewhere in to the main
.avi files ...
for ex.: it could be inserted in the header of the avi file ! or in a special area of the avi file !
or ... somewhere else .. .. inside the avi file ! :)

so, if when knew how the muxing is exactly done .. we can reverse it !! right ? ;)
or ..

if we could find where exactly subbed avi's stored inside the final avi file ! , we can extract it :)

i'll try to look over the internet .. about AVI files structure... mybe i can find something !!!!

Please ..
if anyone can help with this ... we will make a break through for AVISub , if this feature is added to it ..... ;)

it's really interesting .... right ! ;)

momoaal when i demuxed the avisubbed divx it was 1,5 mb smaller. that means that at least to me 99% the srt becomes BMP SORT OF and we have OCR ISSUES !!!
Even if you extract the srt wont be srt any more ! but an visual format maybe it can be extracted as idx sub but it needs an convertion.
I am pretty sure that is visual since that no codepage is needed in order to play on the dvds and the strange characers are supported.
To me the internal format is visual [bitmap] and that is a big problem
